What is a Domain Name and How can I Register a Domain Name?
Domain Names are simply shortcuts to the IP Addresses. It's nothing more than a word that's associated with a number, so that we don't have to remember the number. When you "surf the internet", you use Domain Names all the time. www.google.com is the name of a popular search engine. www.facebook.com is the name of a popular social site. All web sites are actually located by IP Addresses. Those Domain Names are simply shortcuts to the IP Addresses; just easy to remember words that point to long, hard to remember numbers.
Sometimes you hear people talk about buying Domain Names, or selling them. That's just not the way it works. You can never fully own Domain Names. A Domain Name is something you rent, like an apartment, or a car. You rent them, by going through a process called Domain Name Registration.
Choosing a Domain Name
When you're choosing a domain name, it is important that you choose a name that has meaning for your business. It could be difficult to find a name that pertains to your business or what you are interested in promoting because to date there have been millions of domain registrations. If you are creating a site that will be industry specific, you should buy a domain that is relevant, yet still easy to remember. For example, if you were going to create a health related site, you would pick a name like, "yourHealthSite.com" or "your-health-site.com"
Is the Domain Name that I want Available?
After you decide what Domain Name you want, you must find out whether someone else has already taken that Domain Name. After all, there can only be ONE of each Domain Name on the internet.
You can do this one in two ways. You can sit in front of your computer, making up names, and checking availability as you think of them. Or, you can make up a list ahead of time and check them all at once, when you have time.
Domain Name Registration
The next step is setting up an Account with a good Domain Name registrar (a registrar is just a company that registers Domain Names for you).www.GoDaddy.com has tools that make this process easier, and they are one of the best domain name provider, in my opinion. The prices of their Domain Names are reasonable. They are not the only Domain Name provider, and if you have reason not to use them, then feel free to use the one you prefer.
After you have checked for availability for a specific Domain Name, and found a good Name to register, presto! one more last step. The last step is to register and pay for the Domain Name, and that's is!
