You have to base your decisions today on the results desired in the future. If you are mired in the past, the ladder to success will always be out of reach.

For example, say you have made poor decisions about a new product. You may feel pressured to stand by your choices because of the money already spent. But the initial cost of the campaign should not influence your future decisions – your commitment is to future results and not to past mistakes.

Examining the timing of your decisions

Timing is always crucial to the success of decisions. For example, if your company is the first to introduce a new product to a market, it may gain a huge advantage. On other hand, sometimes delaying action pays off too – for example, postponing a purchase until prices drop.

Consider decision linkages

Decisions you make at work never affect just you. They ultimately ripple across departments and often to the customer. Ask yourself this simple question before acting on a business solution: How and where am I adding value to my organization through my decision?

For example, would a decision to move into a new market mean you would risk neglecting your existing customers?

The Executive Summary is often the most important part of your business plan. As the name suggests, it is the summary of the entire plan. Positioned at the front of the document, it is the first part to be read. However, as a summary, it makes sense to write it last. It may be the only part that will be read. Faced with a large pile of funding requests, venture capitalists, banks and different categories of investors have been known to separate business plans into 'worth considering' and 'discard' piles based on this section alone.

What is the Executive Summary?

The executive summary is a synopsis of the key points of your entire plan. It should include highlights from each section of the rest of the document – from the key features of the business opportunity through to the elements of the financial forecasts. Its purpose is to explain the basics of your business in a way that both informs and interests the reader. If, after reading the executive summary, an investor or manager understands what the business is about and is keen to know more, the executive summary has done its job. It should also be concise. In some cases, it should be no longer than two pages at most – but should be interesting to read. It’s advisable to write this section of your plan after you have completed the rest.

What is it not?

1.      The executive summary is not a brief description of the business and its products or a synopsis of the entire plan. It is a summary of the key points of your business plan.

2.      It is not an extended table of contents because this will make for very dull reading and may put off the reader. You should rather ensure it shows the highlights of the plan, than restating the details the plan contains.

3.      It is not a hype document for bragging what your business will achieve and how much money you will be making for yourself or for your investors. Agreed, the executive summary should excite the reader enough to read the entire plan. However, an experienced investor or businessperson will recognise hype and this will undermine the plan's credibility.

The Need for the Executive Summary

1.      It is time-saving for anyone who wants to understand what your business plan is all about. By reading the executive summary, a reader of your plan understands the direction of your business, what it intends to do, who its markets are, what products it is offering at what price, who its owners and managers are, the compensation plan and all other important details that you find in a well-organised business.  

2.      Investors can easily make up their mind by reading this section of your plan.

3.      Managers can know the direction of the business and its strategic plans by going through this section.

4.      It can also help you as the owner of the business to get fast information about the business without necessarily delving into the other more detailed parts of the plan.

Until your mind sees it, your hands cannot touch it. Success is not triggered by eyesight, it is inspired by insight. Until you open your mind, not just your eyes, you may linger in the camp of mediocrity, underachievement and misery for too long.

2.      Work with your mind. The era of hard workers is gone. Only smart workers earn more, get promoted faster and experience all-round favours in the corporate and business world. Your mind helps you to discover how you can do something better, faster, cheaper or better. Your mind is not just for calculations; it is to move you always to a new level.

3.      Project with your mind. Successful people make projections with their mind. They don’t live from month to month without a goal that inspires them. Use your mind to make projections concerning your life.

4.      Plan with your mind. He who fails to plan, plans to fail. As Ben Carson, the world-class and renowned neurosurgeon observed, “… the average person spends more time planning his or her birthday party than planning his or her life. Most of us are wasting those amazing frontal lobes (brain).” Your mind is not for mere decoration; it is for the decoration of your destiny.

5.      Pray with your mind. Man is a spiritual being. So prayer is very important. When you pray with your mind, you are making it fertile to receive fresh ideas that have the capacity to change your life.

6.      Write down the ideas and products from your mind. Your mind is very powerful. However, it easily falls victim to forgetfulness. So always keep a paper and pen handy to write down the ideas, suggestions and products that come to you from your mind.

7.      Invest in your mind. Your mind needs to be fed, just like your body needs to be fed. For your mind not to be malnourished, you need to feed it with the right kind of information. Attend seminars, read good books and magazines, listen to good and professional tapes and CDs. Stretch the frontiers of your mind, if you desire to be a winner.

These things will change you forever, and really make your mind the richest place it was designed to be.

When should you write a business plan?

If our SMEs are to measure up to standards and succeed today, they need to be built on enduring systems and adopt global best practices. The reason small businesses and start-ups fail is no other reason than the fact that they have no plan in place for the business. Like one owner of a high-end restaurant put it, “All my plans for this business are in my head.” For most SMEs, the plans, objectives and strategy of the business are in their head. And since these items are in their head, they are the only ones that can give interpretation and direction to the business. This limits the business and can make it go under.

Organization is the key to managing your time well. The best way to handle multiple tasks is to develop an organizational plan. Your organizational plan should include the followings strategies:

•  Keep ahead of paperwork.
  Try to handle each piece of paper only once; read it, act on it, file it, or throw it away. Design a system, such as color-coded files, to organize your documents into relevant categories. For example, put all dictations into one file and calls that need to be made into another. This system will help you locate what you need quickly.
• Keep your desktop clear.
  Clear everything from the top of your desk except your current task. A desk piled high with paperwork can distract or discourage you. Put work you are not attending to out of sight so that you can focus on the task at hand.
• Make a daily plan.
  Take time each day to create a plan that identifies both long-term and short-term goals. Give priority to daily activities according to how they will contribute towards these goals, and schedule tasks according to these priorities. Keep your daily plan in sight to help you resist distractions, stay on task, and refocus after interruptions.
• Stay focused.
  Distractions ensure that a project will take longer. Try to work on one project at a time. If you become distracted by other tasks, refer to your daily plan to help refocus. If you must put something you are working on aside, make note of where you were so you can come back to it. If the activity level in your office makes it impossible to work effectively on a project that requires concentration, reserve a quiet place to get the work done. Do not waste time trying to concentrate in the midst of distractions.
• Organize telephone calls.
  Keep calls brief and to the point. Make a list of the information that you need before making calls. Set aside specific times to make calls; do not interrupt other duties. Be professional and courteous but focus on the exchange of information, not socializing.
• Keep a permanent information log.
  Keep a log of information from calls. Details that seem insignificant now may be useful later. Take note of names, numbers, and dates in a permanent logbook.
• Finish one project before starting the next one.
  Be realistic about time. Do not start more than you can accomplish. Set reasonable deadlines and stick to them. If you cannot meet a deadline, try to get help or more time. Avoid taking on other work that does not help you meet the goals set out in your daily plan.

   When you begin to search for solutions, try not to limit the creative possibilities by focusing on why something might not work. Imagine an ideal solution. For example, if the Wright Brothers had concentrated on all the logical reasons why flight was impossible, they may never have gotten off the ground. Be imaginative. 2. Develop an ideal solution.
   Once you have identified your goals, you must plan how to accomplish them. Use your imagination to develop a solution. Think about your ideal goal, and then try to find a way to make it work. Be creative. 

3. Implement your ideal solution.
   You have identified your objectives and you have given your imagination the freedom to develop ways in which you can achieve your goal. Now comes the real work. You must make it happen. Examine your plan and make sure it is feasible. Remember your limits. 

4. Be prepared to modify and adapt your solution when necessary.
   Creative problem-solving abilities allowed you to identify, develop, and implement the ideal solution. Do not limit your creativity. There may be ways to achieve your goals that you do not know about. Be flexible and prepared to modify your solutions if necessary.
